Montrose Bay High School Newsletter - Term 1 Week 9
Message from the Principal
As we conclude Term 1 of 2025, I am delighted to share the progress and achievements our school community has made. This term has been a testament to our collective dedication and commitment to our goals.
Student Attendance and Behaviour: We have seen a significant improvement in student attendance rates across the school this year. This positive trend reflects our students' enthusiasm and engagement with their learning. Additionally, student suspensions have reduced by around 40% compared to the same period last year. This reduction is a clear indicator of the positive behaviour and respectful environment we are fostering within our school.
NAPLAN Participation: I am pleased to report that over 90% of our students completed the NAPLAN testing, aligning with the Department of Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) expectations. This high participation rate demonstrates our students' commitment to their academic growth and our teachers' dedication to supporting them.
Academic Achievements: Our teachers continue to drive improvement across the school, guided by our School Improvement Targets. A recent analysis of the Australian Curriculum Framework results indicates that, by the end of 2024, we increased the percentage of students achieving annual growth in English, Maths, and Science by 8%. Furthermore, student achievement at or above standard in these learning areas increased by 7%. These impressive gains are a testament to the hard work of our students and the unwavering support of our teaching staff.
Year 7 Camp: One of the highlights of this term was the Year 7 camp at Blue Lagoon, which I had the pleasure of attending. The camp provided an excellent opportunity for students to build new connections and relationships with staff and their peers while being challenged out of their comfort zones. The activities were designed to foster teamwork, resilience, and personal growth, and it was wonderful to see our students thrive in this environment.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all our staff and the wider community for their incredible efforts and support throughout Term 1. Your dedication and hard work have been instrumental in achieving these outstanding results. As we head into the holidays and Easter break, I wish everyone a restful and enjoyable time with family and friends.
Thank you once again for your continued support, and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve together in Term 2.

School Association
The Montrose Bay High School Association met for its AGM in Week 7, confirming our current membership and welcoming new parent, Amy. We also had Ella and Nataya share the planned activities from the student leadership group – what fantastic representatives of their cohort they were!
A hot topic of discussion was the various ways that information is shared with parents. Just because we live in a digital era doesn’t mean it’s a seamless process. Thanks to Tim and Kumudu for being open to our thoughts and suggestions.
As always, if you are a parent or guardian who wants to be involved in the MBHS Association, please contact the school office.

Communicating Learning Progress
Soon families will receive the Application to Learning Progress Report. The checklist gives a quick snapshot of how your child has settled into school this year.
If your child has a learning plan, their priority learning goals are detailed within their Learning Plan. A copy of your child’s Learning Plan is included with their report or will be shared with you next term.
The table below is an outline of our Communicating Learning Progress with Families schedule across the year. We know that sharing learning progress more regularly will support the development of strong partnerships and help families to feel connected to their child’s learning. Opportunities to meet with your child’s teacher/s about their learning progress will be provided in Term 3.

Regular and ongoing communication with your child’s teacher will have the best impact on your child’s education. Please feel free to contact us in addition to the schedule above.
Year 9
In our Year 9 Engagement lessons this term, we’ve focused on unpacking and embracing our Montrose Mindset values.
Our core values for Term 1 have been Responsibility, Respect, and Connection. By exploring what these values look like, sound like, and feel like in our school context, students have been discovering how these values relate to their attendance and engagement in all aspects of school life.
Students have taken responsibility for their attitude toward school, including their attendance and mindset. To help foster a sense of belonging and connection, they’ve participated in several group activities designed to unpack our values in ways that feel relevant and achievable.
One key learning task this term was to create a visual poster that shows how our values are demonstrated through actions, words, and attitudes.
Students brought thought, care, and creativity to this task, have a look at what they created -

HASS
In history we have been looking at the concept of significance and learned about the transportation of Tasmanian Aboriginals to Flinders Island and Oyster Cove.
Check us out, hard at work!

NAPLAN
We did an amazing job in NAPLAN this year! We did so well we all got icy poles!

Year 10
Year 10 has had a very positive start to 2025, with an increase in overall attendance when compared with this time last year. This positive trend is one of many highlights and is evidence of the dedication of our students, the support of our parents, and the hard work of our staff.
Throughout Term 1, our Student Leaders and House Captains have been representing our school to a high standard in the community. Recently, they have assisted with several primary school sports carnivals, showcasing their leadership skills. Their efforts have not only helped these events run smoothly but have also strengthened our school's connection to our feeder Primary Schools.
Our teachers have recently completed evidence of learning for Maths and English, and the standard of work produced by our Year 10 students is of a high quality. This achievement reflects the students' hard work, the effective teaching strategies employed by our staff, and the supportive learning environment we strive to create.
Looking forward to Term 2, we will be focussing on future pathways for our students. We will be visited by representatives from Claremont College, UTAS, TasTafe, and the Building Apprenticeships Scheme. Additionally, our students will have the opportunity to visit Claremont College for a Taster Day, giving them a glimpse into potential future educational and career pathways.
We look forward to these enriching experiences and encourage all students to take full advantage of these opportunities.
Finally, we are excited to announce that the leavers' uniforms will be arriving early in Term 2.
