Teaching & Learning


Year 7 and 8

Year 7 and 8 students study the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Science (HASS), Science and Health and Physical Education for a full year. Students have a taste of a selection of elective subjects that are half year (semester). Elective subjects may include: Music, Drama, Visual Art, Materials, Design & Technology (MDT), Media Arts, Food Technologies, Outdoor Education. To support building connections, all Year 7 and 8 students remain in their Home Group classes for all subjects.

Year 9 and 10

Year 9 and 10 students study the core subjects of English, Mathematics, History, Science and Health and Physical Education for a full year. Students select from a variety of elective subjects that are full year. Elective subjects may include: Music, Drama, Visual Art, Materials, Design & Technology (MDT), Media Arts, Food Technologies, Catering, Photography, Outdoor Education, Team Sport, Creative Writing, Digital Technologies, Hair and Beauty. To support transitioning students into Year 11/12 and beyond, all Year 9 and 10 students remain in their Home Group classes for core subjects and integrate with students from other year levels in elective subjects.

Reading and Engagement Priorities

Each year level is allocated two 60-minute sessions per week dedicated to Reading and Engagement.

The Reading Priority

At MBHS, we have a tiered approach to the explicit instruction of reading.

Tier 1 – High quality teaching and learning with Quality Differentiated Teacher Practice delivered through the MBHS Prioritised Australian Curriculum.

Tier 2 – Small group in class support with teacher and/or Teacher Aide, MacqLit literacy program, small group literacy program focussed on fluency.

Tier 3 – Orton-Gillingham program, one to one intensive literacy support.
